Cathy Lynn Whaley, 59, of Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly at Johnson City Medical Center on Friday, March 20, 2026.
Cathy was born on July 23, 1966, in Johnson City, to the late James Whaley and Betty Yates Whaley. She was a graduate of University High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Tennessee State University. She also held a Masters of Arts degree in English from Clemson University.
Known to her friends as 'The Maven,' Cathy was a lifelong lover of literature and film, which led her to a 20-year career as a beloved professor in the Literature and Language Department at ETSU. Her love of the written word was matched only by her passion for helping her students learn and grow. She once said that her favorite part of teaching was "being in the trenches with the students, helping them improve and seeing them succeed."
Outside the classroom, when not reading the latest great novel or The New York Times, she could often be found gathering with friends at Johnson City Brewing Company. A real sports fanatic, she loved her Los Angeles Dodgers, Clemson Tigers, and all things college basketball.
She leaves behind her three beloved cats, Gordo, Mo, and Oliver, who filled her home and her Facebook page with personality, humor, and a bit of mischief.
Cathy is survived by several first cousins, including Jane Riley Bonsor, Jackie Riley, Danny Riley, David Yates, and Larry O'Dell, numerous second cousins, and many friends who will cherish her memory.
A celebration of life will be held from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Johnson City Brewing Company, 714 West Walnut Street in Johnson City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Washington County-Johnson City Animal Shelter.
