Doris Lena Nelson, 90, of 3209 Bristol Highway, Johnson City, died Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the NHC of Johnson City. She was a native of Old Butler, daughter of the late Vernie and Judy Bowman Atwood. Doris was a homemaker and member of the Boones Creek Bible Church. Formerly a resident of the Boones Creek area for 60 years. She was an avid gardener and a graduate of Watagua Academy. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Sam H. Nelson in 1986; five brothers, James, Wylie, Lewis, Bill and Joe Atwood; three sisters, Pearl Perkins, Maude Trussell and Beatrice Barnes; also a niece Joan Sumpter. Survivors include: two sons, James V. Nelson and his wife, Mary Ann of Sulphur Springs, a son Ronald G. Nelson of Piney Flats; a daughter and son-in-law Phyllis and Bill Flanary of Asheboro, NC; one special sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and D. W. Reese of Butler; several half brothers and sisters; a special niece Peggy Emmert and her husband Kenneth of Johnson City; two grandsons Jay Flanary and his wife Paula, Sam R. Nelson; a great grandson Samuel Jackson Flanary; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the South Chapel of the Morris '? Baker Funeral Home, under the direction of Rev. John Perkins (nephew) and Rev. Harold McNabb. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. A committal service will be conducted in the Highlands Church Cemetery, Jonesborough following the funeral service. Active pallbearers will be: Charles Nelson, James Barker, Carl Kinnick, John Henry Kinnick, Monroe Ellis and D. W. Reese. Honorary pallbearers will be: Clay Atwood, Clint Perkins, Jr., Kenneth Emmert, Earl Atwood and Bob Atwood. The family would like to offer special thanks to: the NHC staff especially, Steve Gurley, Anthony Webb, Carol Shull, Leona Barnette and Sonja Tipton; also Caris Health Care.
