Listen to Obituary

Dorothy Ann “Dottie” Gibson was born in Cumberland, KY on June 12, 1936, and passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in Johnson City, TN, where she had lived for 61 years.

Dottie was a wonderful mother, nana, wife, golfer, painter and friend. She was a gracious host for countless fundraisers and parties and a tireless volunteer, philanthropist, board member and supporter for Girls Incorporated of Johnson City/Washington County, Nicewonger Children’s Hospital, Mountain States Health Alliance, Mountain States Foundation Board, Washington County Humane Society, Board of Directors for Watauga Mental Health Services, and the American Red Cross. She was an artist and master calligrapher who used those talents and skills to make custom handwritten invitations for weddings, parties, menus, special events throughout Johnson City, and even personalized basketballs for East Tennessee State University. In addition, she served as president of The Junior League of Johnson City and president of The Washington County Medical Alliance. Dottie was an excellent golfer, a JCCC Ladies Golf Champion and made several holes in one - - more than her husband Jim, which she never let him forget. Dottie was a long-standing member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and a huge fan and donor of ETSU Athletics.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Dr. James “Jim” Gibson Jr. and is survived by her daughter Maribeth Miles (Jeff), her son James Warren Gibson III (Chere) and her three grandchildren Kehler, Grey and Tyler.

In honor of Dottie’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Those who would like to make a tribute to her memory may do so by donating to the Washington County Humane Society.
