Eloise Greene Pope, formerly of Xanadu Court, passed away on May 25, 2025, at NHC Healthcare, Johnson City, TN. She was 97 years old and the daughter of the late Tipton S. Greene and Lucy C. Peterson Greene.
Mrs. Pope was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University where she played on the basketball teams. She was a music teacher in the Rogersville City Schools for 5 years, a teacher and librarian in the Johnson City Schools for 6 years, and a librarian at the East Tennessee State University Library for 25 years.
She was a lifelong Methodist and member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women, Circle 9, Solon Gentry Class, Altar Guild, Goodtimers and Munsey Service Group.
Mrs. Pope was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and Beta Delta Chapter. She was a member of other organizations including: P.E.O. Sisterhood, The Monday Club, ETSU National Alumni Association, the Retirees Association and the Pirate Club. Mrs. Pope volunteered at the Science Hill High School Library and played the piano for many organizations and groups over the years.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Jake" Pope.
Surviving Mrs. Pope are one son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy Pope of Johnson City; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Whitfield “Chip” East of Williamsburg, VA; three grandsons, Brian Cooper (Carissa), Neal Cooper (Erin) and Matthew Pope (Melanie); three granddaughters, Staci Thacker (Will), Katie Pirch (Chris), Madison Whitley (Michael), and 13 great grandchildren (Adeline, Andrew, Emery, Eva, Harper, Hudson, Lily, Nolan, Marshall, Olivia, Penelope, Sadie, and Scarlett).
The family would like to offer special thanks to Iris Chumbley, for serving as a personal and loving caregiver for many years, and to the staff of NHC Healthcare in Johnson City, who have provided care and critical support during the past few years
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 7, 2025, beginning at 10:00am at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11:00am with The Reverend Beth Sullivan officiating, and a graveside service will immediately follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park.
Active Pallbearers will be Brian Cooper, Neal Cooper, Matthew Pope, Christopher Pirch, Michael Whitley, and Will Thacker. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Solon Gentry Sunday School Class.
