Eugene Garfield Ernst Jr., 78, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025.
Born on March 9, 1947, to Eugene and Verna Ernst, Gene lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure.
Gene proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a Military Police officer before pursuing a distinguished career as a metallurgic engineer for Aerojet.
Outside of his professional life, Gene embraced the world with an adventurous spirit. He loved hiking in the mountains, practicing yoga, going out to eat, traveling, and sharing his gift of music through the piano and as a member of a rock band.
Gene’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Helen Ernst; his son, Tony Ernst; his cherished grandchildren, Bella and Kolsen; Tony’s fiancée, Aundrea and children Abigail and Elijah. He is also remembered by his loving sisters, Martha Boyer, Jan Long, and Meg Ashworth, along with extended family and countless friends whose lives he touched.
His warmth, wisdom, and humor touched everyone he met. He lived every day to the fullest, teaching us all the true meaning of perseverance, faith, and love. His music, his laughter, and his kind spirit will forever echo in our hearts. We are so grateful for the time we had and the lessons he left behind.
A visitation of family and friends will be held on Monday, September 8th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM with military honors at Morris-Baker Funeral Home.
