Remembering Gary Lee Shockley
A life defined by love and a faithful testimony to the Lord.
With heavy hearts yet profound joy, we announce that Gary Shockley of Johnson City, Tennessee has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He entered Heaven on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He lived a life full of peace, joy, and cherished moments with his family that we will now carry on in our hearts. Today we honor his memory and celebrate the remarkable man he is.
Gary was born on March 4, 1961, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Morris Daniel Shockley and Edith Olivene Shockley of Johnson City, Tennessee. He graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1979 and served in the United States Army from 1985 to 1990. He faithfully served the Lord at Bread of Life Fellowship in Johnson City. Gary Shockley is survived by his wife, Melissa Shockley; his two children, Chris Shockley and Joseph Shockley; his three grandchildren, Kyleigh Shockley, Kaylyn Dye and Elias Shockley; his four siblings, Bobby Shockley, David Shockley, Keith Shockley, Jane Walters and four nephews and one niece.
His greatest passion was spending time with Lisa, his wife of 45 years. He treasured their long drives through the beautiful mountain scenery, reminiscing together about their younger years, playing video games with his grandchildren, and listening to his granddaughter sing. Gary was a fearless man who approached life with tremendous optimism and unwavering faith. He was a man of peace and contentment, with a witty sense of humor. He took great pride in providing for, protecting, and mentoring his wife and children.
As we reflect on the fondest memories we shared with him during his brief time on Earth, we hold on to the promise that one day we will be reunited with him-an opportunity to smile and laugh together forever and catch up on all the wonderful things he is now experiencing. We honor him by keeping our faith, cherishing our families, loving and protecting one another, living without sorrow, remaining joyful, and always holding on to hope.
The Gary Shockley family would like to invite you to share your memories and love for him in a gathering of friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Bread of Life Fellowship, 2308 Watauga Rd, Johnson City, Tennessee 37601.
