Haylan Michael Engdahl, 19, of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, was killed tragically on August 19, 2026, in Hampton, Tennessee. Though his life was far too short, the love, laughter, friendship, and joy he brought to those around him will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Haylan had a remarkable ability to light up any room with his smile and a quick joke. There was rarely anyone he met who did not become his friend almost instantly. He had a genuine warmth about him that made people feel welcomed and valued, and his caring spirit touched countless lives. Haylan was bold, adventurous, and full of life. Those who knew him will remember not only his infectious smile, but also the way he made people laugh and the deep friendships he formed wherever he went.
One of Haylan's greatest loves and passions was cycling. He was rarely seen on a bicycle without a smile on his face. He began racing mountain bikes in Wisconsin with SLS MTB during eighth grade and quickly discovered that cycling was more than a hobby—it was a way of life. After beginning work at Total Cyclery, Robbie converted him to a "Roadie". Haylan's dedication and talent opened doors that led him to Team Wisconsin and Indiana Cycling Development. Through countless hours of training and an extraordinary commitment to the sport he loved, he earned a place on the varsity cycling team at Milligan University, where he quickly became part of another amazing cycling family.
When he wasn't riding, Haylan loved spending time outdoors. Camping and fishing with his best friends at Devil's Lake were among his favorite pastimes. He especially enjoyed the adventures they shared together, including a recent annual guys' trip where he proudly caught a 46-inch northern pike.
Haylan was a 2025 graduate of Kenosha Christian Life and was a sophomore at Milligan University, where he was continuing his education and pursuing his dreams. Haylan was a hardworking employee of Kwik Trip #296 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin and Total Cyclery in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was also a member of Journey Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and had been involved with Christ Community Church in Zion, Illinois, including youth group and summer camp. His faith and the relationships he built through his church communities were an important part of his life.
He also believed strongly in giving back and serving others. Haylan was an Eagle Scout with Troop #667 in Winthrop Harbor and participated in Ride to Thrive and Audacity Cycling events supporting cancer treatment and fundraising efforts. His willingness to serve others was another reflection of the generous heart he carried with him.
He is preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother's, Jeraldine Burns and Kathie Guinn.
Haylan leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his parents, Chris and Heather Engdahl; his brother, Rylan Engdahl; his maternal grandparents, Mike and Tisha Hudrick and Terri Burns; his paternal grandparents, Jim and Norma Engdahl; his aunts and uncles, Kevin and Patti Burns, Auntie Jill, Shannon and John Maxwell, T.J. and Kelsey De La Rosa, and Sean and Megan Engdahl; his beloved girlfriend, Ellery Cox; and many cousins and dear friends whom he considered brothers. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Thor, who was a cherished part of his life.
There are no words sufficient to describe the depth of the pain and loss felt by those who loved Haylan. He was deeply loved, and his absence leaves an immeasurable space in the lives of his family, friends, teammates, classmates, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
Haylan's life reminds us that the measure of a life is not simply in the number of years we are given, but in the joy we bring to others, the friendships we make, the adventures we share, and the love we leave behind. His smile, his laughter, his fearless spirit, and his passion for cycling will never be forgotten.
Haylan will always live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May he forever be remembered riding freely, smiling brightly, and surrounded by the love of the many people whose lives he touched.
