James "Robbie" Ray III, age 62 of Johnson City, formerly of Watauga, passed away at home surrounded by his family and friends. Robbie grew up in Watauga and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1981. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Johnson City.
Robbie was a passionate sports fan, with his heart firmly dedicated to the Miami Dolphins—he was an unwavering supporter of Dan Marino, his all-time favorite player. He also cheered for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the New York Yankees, and he took great joy in collecting sports memorabilia and Hot Wheels cars, showcasing his enthusiastic personality. A true car enthusiast, Robbie loved anything and everything about cars, whether it was watching shows or working on them. He also gave back to his community as a little league baseball umpire, where he cherished the interactions with young players, always encouraging them to do their best.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Oliver, son, Joshua Ray, a brother, Scott Oliver, and his cats, Edward and Simon.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 27 years, Ellen Ray, son, Daniel Marino Ray, daughter, Rebecca (Eric Robertson) Ray, father, James Ray, Jr., sister, Lisa (Greg) Allen and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by longtime friend, Rebecca Livingston, and his cats, Allie and Sammie.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 22, 2025 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Southside Baptist Church, 1928 Wheeler St, Johnson City, TN 37604. A funeral service will be immediately following at 7:00pm with Pastor Roy Lowe officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, August 23, 2025 in Roselawn Memorial Park, Johnson City. All attending are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50am.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either your local animal shelter or your local little league organization.
