John 14:6 - Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life...”

Johnnie Lee Crumley, 76, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 6, 2026. A devoted husband, father, friend, and faithful servant of God. He passed away surrounded by the love of his family. While our hearts are broken, we rejoice in knowing that he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior.

Johnnie was born in 1949 to James Albert and Lilia Tapiero Crumley of Savannah, Georgia. During his childhood, he was raised in Fairfield, California and in the Philippines, during the Vietnam War, on Clark Air Base, where his father was stationed in the military. Those early experiences helped shape his adventurous spirit and appreciation for people from all walks of life.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army as an SFC. His last tour was in Afghanistan. He carried the values of honor, duty, and service throughout the rest of his life. Although life brought its share of challenges, God blessed him with lasting love when he married Karen. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and unconditional love.

His life’s journey led him to Washington College, Tennessee, the area his family was from. Johnnie earned three degrees from the following colleges: Northeast State Community College, the Sneed College of Business, and East Tennessee State University. Johnnie worked for and retired from the U. S. Postal Service. Johnnie loved learning and supported higher education. “You can never know enough, and you can learn something new everyday!” he would say. Curiosity motivated many of the connections he fostered with the community. He was a hard worker and knew what it meant to provide for and protect the ones you love.

Johnnie had a servant's heart and loved the Lord. He was a member of Depot City Church. He genuinely lived the words of Jesus found in Matthew 22:39: "Love your neighbor as yourself." His kindness wasn't reserved for special occasions—it was woven into his everyday life. On July 4th, he was seen by his daughter planting roses for a neighbor who had recently lost his wife, a simple yet powerful reflection of the compassion that defined him. He often reminded his family “to be grateful for each day the good Lord has blessed you with.” He never missed an opportunity to encourage someone, lend a helping hand, or make another person's burden a little lighter.

Family was the greatest joy of his life. Affectionately known as "Papa Bear," he was a source of strength, wisdom, laughter, and unwavering love. He delighted in spending time with those he loved, making memories that will be treasured for generations. Whether sharing stories, singing songs, or simply enjoying one another's company, Johnnie made everyone around him feel welcome.

He was an animal lover. He was always feeding strays, photographing animals, and talking to others about their pets. He loved his pets and always advocated for others to take proper care of their little friends.

Johnnie was a collector of many things. He loved to travel and see other places. He enjoyed aviation, always finding his way to attend air shows or an airfield. He loved motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidson and Honda. He was known as a “Chevy man” and proud of it, by his classic Chevrolet truck he often drove.

He loved music and could often be found singing or playing in the garage, bringing joy to those fortunate enough to hear him. He believed life was meant to be lived, not merely observed. One of his favorite sayings was, "Be part of it," encouraging his family to embrace every opportunity, cherish one another, and live life to its fullest. Johnnie loved life and lived it to its fullest. His words and actions reflected this about him. He had a heart of gold and always found ways to make someone’s day a little brighter and better.

Along with his parents, Johnnie is preceded in death by: his stepmother, Aida Crumley; his mother-in-law, Lucy Ann Yarber; and many other relatives of the Crumley family.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include: his loving wife, Karen Darlene Crumley; his precious daughters, Callie and Lee Ann Crumley; brothers, Jim and Bruce Crumley; sisters, Hazel Shirley, Margie Santos, and Joann Ecklund; father-in-law, Jimmie “Sarge” Yarber; and brothers-in-law, Roger Yarber, Mike Yarber (Doc), Mark Yarber, and Ben Yarber (Carey).

A visitation of family and friends is scheduled from 11:00am – 1:00pm Monday, July 13, 2026, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home.

A committal service will be held 2:00pm Monday, July 13, 2026 at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in the historic section. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50pm. Pastor Antwann Yocum will be officiating the service. Military honors will be performed by the U.S. Army and the Boone Dam VFW.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington County Animal Shelter or The Haven of Mercy in Johnson City, Tennessee in Johnnie’s honor.

Johnnie leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, humility, and love. His example reminds us that greatness is often found in quiet acts of service, faithful devotion to family, and treating every person with dignity and compassion. Those who knew Johnnie always had a friend in him.

Though he will be deeply missed every day, his family finds comfort in knowing his love will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched.

“We salute you always and forever, Dad.”

"You'll forever be in our hearts, and fly high, Papa Bear."
