Leroy “Lee” Wayne Covert, 78, of Johnson City, Tennessee, was born on January 31st, 1947, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Leroy passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

From an early age, he carried within him a steadfast determination and a kind heart — qualities that would define him throughout his life.

When his country called, Leroy answered with courage and conviction. He served proudly in the United States Army, fighting on the front lines during the Vietnam War. The sacrifices he made, and the hardships he endured, are beyond what words can fully capture. Yet even amidst the darkness of war, Leroy’s loyalty to his brothers in arms and his love for his country shone brightly. He remained forever bonded to those who served beside him, later becoming a Life Member of the Viet Nam Vets Motorcycle Club — a brotherhood that held deep meaning for him.

Upon returning home, Leroy found a new way to channel his talents and precision. His gift for mechanical drawing led him into a career as a design engineer. He approached his work with the same dedication and pride he brought to every endeavor. He was a very hard worker.

Leroy was so much more than his service or his career. He was a man who embraced life’s joys. He loved the freedom of the open road, riding his Harley with the wind at his back and the sun on his face. He cherished time outdoors, finding peace and purpose in hunting. And perhaps most tenderly, he adored baking with his grandchildren and spending time with his loving wife.

Lee was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He made a new friend wherever he went, and he was sure to make you laugh with his quick wit and fun spirit. He was a man who stood tall, who loved fiercely, and who never lost his sense of humor or his generosity of spirit.

Lee was predeceased by: his parents, Melvin Leroy Covert and Beatrice Louise Schmitt, and his son, Jacob Kalinowski.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include: his loving wife, Darlene Covert; his sons, Chris Covert and Joshua Kalinowski; his daughters, Tina Cinque and Sarah Greenier; grandsons, Christopher Covert Jr. and Jacob A. Kalinowski; granddaughters, Gabby Cinque, Raena Kalinowski-English, Keara Perez, Alondra Smith, Evan Smith-James; nephew, Hayden Stover and many, many more. He came into this world as an only child and left with more family and love than he knew what to do with.

A visitation of friends is scheduled from 11:00am till 12:00pm on Saturday, July 19, 2025, in the Oak Hall at Morris-Baker Funeral Home.
