Mary Katherine Joyce Smith

December 31, 1946 — April 11, 2023

Mary Katherine Buchanan Joyce Smith, 76 of Pikeville, Kentucky passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at her home.




She was a homemaker and a follower of Jesus Christ for many decades. A deacon in the Presbyterian Church for decades, a Sunday School teacher and Girl Scout Leader plus active in many other groups especially animal rescue.




Katherine was born in Lexington, Kentucky on December 31, 1946 a daughter of the late Antoinette “Toni” Freeman and Isiac Hugh Buchanan Jr.




Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Hunter Cornett.




She is survived by her husband, Rodney Smith, daughter, Stephanie Dozier of Nashville, Tennessee and step-daughter, Shondale McKinney (Morris Smith) of Pikeville, Kentucky.




She is also survived by her brother, Isiac Hugh “Sonny” Buchanan III (Elizabeth) of Hazard, Kentucky and her sister, Elizabeth Settle Shaw (Dennis) of Richmond, Virginia also a grandchild, Ava Cornett of Lexington, Kentucky and step-grandchild, Madison Ray of Pikeville, Kentucky and a host of nieces and nephews.




Visitation will be in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, Friday, April 14, 2023, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.


Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023 in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Trey Mouton and Jerry Bliffen officiating.


Burial will follow in the New Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 592 New Bethel Road, Piney Flats, Tennessee at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Angus Shaw officiating.


Honoring Katherine by serving as Pallbearers will be Kirk Wells, James “Huggie” Williamson, Winston Gunnell, Keith “Coon” Stratton, Eddie Harris, Mike Workman and Matt Amick.




In Lieu of Flowers the family requests that contributions be made in Katherine’s memory to your local Animal Shelter.
