Maxie Jean Pence, 86, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 2, 2026.
A lifelong resident of Johnson City, Maxie was born on February 5, 1940. She was a graduate of Boones Creek High School. Maxie worked as a bank teller at Hamilton Bank and later as a bookkeeper at Daniel Boone High School, where she retired after many years of service. She was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Maxie cherished spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and growing vegetables. She loved the fall season and the holidays and especially enjoyed decorating for them. Maxie also loved listening to music and was an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her previous husbands, J.D. Steffey and Rogers Carl White.
Those left to cherish Maxie’s memory include her husband, Edward Pence III; daughter, Karla Phillips and husband Gary, of Piney Flats; grandson, Bryson Phillips, of Piney Flats; stepson, Dan Pence and wife Karen, of Knoxville; and step-grandsons, Duncan Pence and wife Natalie, of Knoxville, and Angus Pence and wife Callie, of Knoxville.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
