Obituary for Mettie Jo Johnson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mettie Jo Johnson, who left this world on August 29, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on April 23, 1943, in Knoxville, TN, Mettie lived a life full of love, laughter, and a whole lot of spirit. She called Johnson City, TN, her home, where she nurtured her family and filled her days with joy.

Mettie was one heck of a cook, and known for being tough as a pine knot and always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. She loved to crochet, immerse herself in a good book, and enjoyed the ride on the back of that Harley, embracing life to the fullest. Mettie leaves behind her daughters, Lisa Light and Luci Bennett, and as a proud grandmother to her grandchildren: Jessica Byers, Kaitlyn Light, Madison Bennett, and Chris Campbell. She loved her great-grandchildren: Skylar, Nathan, C.J., Mason, Liam, and Tyler, beloved sister to Jenny Brookshire and Dick Sossomon, and a cherished aunt to her nieces Keri McClain and Ashley Brookshire, nephews Branson and Robert Sossomon. Mettie shared a special bond with her long-time caregiver and friend, Lottie Campbell, who provided unwavering love and support, along with the compassionate staff at the Waters of Johnson City and Gentiva Hospice.

We would like to thank Neil Burgner for the love, care, and support he gave to Mettie and her family especially (Lisa).

Mettie was preceded in death by her parents Joe & Carrie Sossomon, and son Jimmy Gentry.

We invite friends and family to celebrate Mettie's remarkable life with us in the coming days. Services will be held at Happy Valley Memorial Park on Thursday September 3, 2026, at 10:30 AM. We will gather to share stories, laughter, and tears, honoring a woman who touched so many lives with her vibrant spirit.

Mettie, you will be deeply missed but forever celebrated in our hearts. Safe travels on your next ride!
