Patrick Alan Hughes

Patrick Alan "Alan" Hughes, 65, passed away at Johnson City Medical Center on May 21, 2025. He was born on October 1, 1959, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Joseph and Juanita (Patrick) Hughes. Alan relocated to Johnson City, Tennessee, in 1977 to attend East Tennessee State University (ETSU), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Alan's career was marked by dedication, expertise, and a passion for designing and developing software. Over the years, he worked for Omni Computer Services, Alliance Technologies, LLC (his own company), Hanson McClain Advisors (now Allworth Financial), and Point Broadband. Alan returned to Lyon Metal Roofing in Piney Flats, TN, in early 2025, where he continued his work as a software engineer until his passing. He was particularly proud of his accomplishments at all of these places. The creation of Chaperone, a sophisticated web filter used by numerous school systems, stands out as a highlight from early in his career. Alan was always exploring the latest development tools from Microsoft and others, often just to see what innovative solutions he could create. Alan's love for life was evident in his zest for driving his beloved Miata-often with the top down, even in freezing weather-and in the care and affection he showed to his two cherished fur baby girls, Widget and Myaki. A man of many friendships, he maintained strong connections across the country, with special mentions of Bret and Kim Lyon and Jonathan Kinnick.

Alan was a member of the Methodist church and participated in the Johnson City Morning Rotary for many years. His loved ones will remember his keen intellect, his perfectionism, and his joy in sharing knowledge with others.

Alan is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie (Shepard) Hughes, for 38 years, his daughter, Erin (and her fiancé, Kenneth Miller); his grandchildren, Gabriel Hughes and Chloe Miller; his dear friend, like a son, Daniel Walton; his special aunt, Lois Young Dobbins; several cousins; his in-laws, Carl and Brenda Shepard; and his sister-in-law, Melissa Shepard.

In addition to his parents, Alan was preceded in death by his uncles, David Young and James Dobbins.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

"For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." -2 Corinthians 5:7-8
