Obituary for Richard Ernest Higdon
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Ernest Higdon, 81, of Johnson City, TN, who left us peacefully on July 9, 2026. Born on February 3, 1945, in LaFollette, TN, Richard brought joy and love to everyone around him.
Richard was preceded in death by his loving parents, Evan and Inez Higdon, and his brother, James Higdon.
He is survived by his devoted son, Dennis (AnnMarie) Higdon, along with his cherished grandchildren, Millie, Tess, and Hattie Higdon, and great grandchild Bowen Higdon. He also leaves behind his family in Vero Beach, Florida, who he adored: niece Laurie Conelly and nephew Trey Higdon, along with their children.
A proud graduate of LaFollette High School's Class of 1963, Richard earned his degree in business from East Tennessee State University. Many will remember him fondly as a dedicated sales representative for Hoechst AG Pharmaceuticals. Despite facing challenges with epilepsy and heart disease that brought his career to an early end, he remained resilient and independent.
Richard was driven by his brother's passion for Sigma Chi fraternity leading him to start a chapter in the late 60s Sigma Chi Alpha, (Alpha #6) which became Zeta Omega Sigma Chi at ETSU in which he was heavily involved his whole life. With his calm demeanor he influenced and mentored many college kids through the years with house visits, lunches, football games and fraternity events.
In his downtime, you could often find him golfing with his son, following the stock market, or passionately cheering for the Atlanta Braves and Tennessee football teams.
Richard will be remembered not just for his many interests but, more importantly, for the love he had for his family, especially his grandchildren. His perseverance through life's challenges inspired those who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday July 19, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at The Johnson City Country Club. We invite all those who knew Richard to join us in celebrating his life and the impact he had on so many. We will honor him with stories, laughter, and remembrance of a truly wonderful man.
