Richard 'Rick' O. Smith, 58, of 230 Appletree Lane, Elizabethton died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He was a native of Champaign, Illinois, son of the late Karl James and Oscarine Sheridan Smith but had lived in Carter County for the last 17 years. Rick was a Quality Auditor for Exide Technology. He was a veteran of Viet Nam having served in the U. S. Navy and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He also was a member of the Powder Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Melba J. Smith of the home; three daughters, Wendy Annette Wilder of Mississippi, Angela Jane (& husband Matthew) Corray of Illinois, Tammy Lorena (& husband Brian) Hensley of Tennessee; a son, Kiel Joseph Thode of Illinois; a brother, Karl Joseph (& wife Linda) Smith of Illinois; four grandchildren Dylan, Britney, Troy and Dakota. A graveside service is scheduled for Monday, November 13, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mt. Home National Cemetery under the direction of Pastor Terry Howell. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. then go in procession to the cemetery.
