Shelby Jean Barnett

Shelby J. Barnett, age 88, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Born on March 1, 1938, Shelby was the daughter of the late Fred and Pauline Pate.

A woman of faith, compassion, and a generous heart, she was a longtime and devoted member of Boone’s Creek Bible Church, where her faith remained an important part of her life.

Shelby spent many years working as a decorator for Home Interiors, where her creativity and love for making things beautiful could truly shine. Later in life, she found great joy in serving others as a volunteer and activities coordinator at several local nursing homes. Shelby had a natural gift for making people feel cared for and included, and she especially loved bringing happiness to those around her. Her kindness and willingness to help others were among the qualities that made her so special.

Shelby also had a lifelong love of music and dancing. As a young adult, she even participated in the Miss Tennessee Skating Queen competition, reflecting the fun-loving, spirited personality that remained a part of her throughout her life. She knew how to enjoy life, and her smile, laughter, and vibrant spirit will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby Barnett; her brother, Robert Pate; and her sister, Reba Hill.

Those left to cherish Shelby’s memory include: her sister, Linda “Cookie” Hawkins; her son, Anthony Barnett; her daughter, Lashay Barnett; her grandchildren, Joseph Lott, Serena Thompson, and Anthony Thompson; her son-in-law, Tony Thompson; her great-grandchildren, Jordyn Powers and Axel Lott; nieces, Angela Butler, Helen Hall, Alisha Campbell, and Tina Ayo; nephews, Vince “Nino” Hawkins and Victor Pate; along with many extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by her kindness.

Shelby leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, compassion, creativity, and love for others. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the love she shared will remain in the hearts of her family and all who were blessed to know her.

The family of Shelby J. Barnett will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A service celebrating Shelby’s life will begin following the visitation at 6:00 pm in the Oak Hall. Rick Powell will be officiating the service.

A graveside service for Shelby will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Johnson City. Those wishing to attend are asked to be at the cemetery by 1:50 pm.
