Smith “Skip” P. Thorton Jr. Major, U.S. Army (Ret.) of Johnson City, was called home by his Lord & Savior on August 9, 2025.
Major Thorton was a resident of Johnson City, TN but traveled to many locations after his graduation from University High in 1966. Upon enlisting in the Army during the Vietnam conflict he then enrolled in the ETSU ROTC to become an officer in the Army. He was an Airborne Ranger and traveled to many places during his time in the military. After retiring from the military, he was the director of Good Samaritans Ministries and fully retired as a C.P.A.
He was preceded in death by his mother Virgina L. Thorton, father Smith P. Thorton Sr., and wife Denice R. Thorton.
He is survived by his daughter Sarah M. Lane (granddaughters Micayla and Madalynn Lane), son Kris Ross (wife Shara) (granddaughters Alyson and Vivian Ross), a brother Jim W. Thorton (wife Melissa) (nephews Justin and James Thorton and niece Lauren Colmer).
Major Thornton was a man of faith and attended St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in addition to assisting with food distribution and the food pantry. He was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

A graveside service for Major Thornton will be held at 11:00am on Friday, August 22, 2025 in Mountain Home National Cemetery, with Pastor James W. Thornton officiating. All attending are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50am.
