Thomas Harry Penix, 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born on October 18, 1944, in Piney Flats, Tennessee, Thomas was the son of the late Roy Lee Penix and Julia Pauline Penix. From the age of 16, Thomas devoted his life to a profession he loved, installing church pews. His work took him to all 48 continental United States and seven countries, and he took great pride in every project. He retired at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship, dedication, and countless friendships formed along the road.
Thomas loved traveling, working with his hands, and meeting new people wherever he went. He was of the Christian faith and, when able, attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church with his wife. He also enjoyed old cars and cheering on the New York Yankees.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Carole Penix; two brothers, Chester Clyde Penix and Raymond Penix; and his sister, Nellie Miller.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 13 years, Brenda Rainbolt Penix; his son, Tommy Lee (Laura) Penix Church; his beloved granddaughter, Catherine Camile; his brother, Roy Lee (Jeanette) Penix, Jr.; his bonus children, Scottie, James, and Becky; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Richard Bawgus. A committal service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Washington County Memory Gardens.
