William Perry Dr. Bailey, Jr.

Dr. William Perry Bailey Jr., age 77, of 1314 Woodland Ave., Johnson City, Tennessee, died March 18, 2005, at Johnson City Medical Center. The son of the late Elizabeth Cass Bailey and William P. Bailey, Dr. Bailey was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. Dr. Bailey had been a physician with Watauga Internal Medicine since 1963. Following graduation from Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University, Dr. Bailey attended the University of Tennessee at Memphis Medical School (class of 1955), where he was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He was in the United States Navy, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His residency was in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Bailey has been a member of the American Lung Association, Tennessee Lung Association and Clan Johnston in America, where he served as past president and a violinist with the Johnson City Symphony. He served on the boards of Monte Vista Cemetery and Oak Hill Cemetery. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he held many offices, a delegate to the Jurisdiction Conference, a delegate to annual conference and the general conference of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights Temple of Jerusalem, Grand Croix and Sons of the American Revolution, Kings Mountain Chapter, Past President, State of Tennessee, Past President and the National Past Surgeon General. He was also a former member of Kiwanis Club. He wrote the chapter on medicine for 'History of Washington County' and was the author of 'History of First United Methodist Church.' He was a member of the Washington County Medical Association and practiced medicine until the day before he died. He was quoted as saying, 'You will know I?ve retired when you read my obituary.' He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Dowell Bailey; three daughters, Katherine Bailey Mathae and her husband, Mark, and their two children, Lauren and Emily; Rebecca Bailey Moore and her husband, Bruce, of Buford, Georgia, and their two children, Collin and Wesley; and Sarah Bailey, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and her special friends: Jill, Jack and Luke Ray. One son, William P. Bailey III and his wife, Wendy, of Johnson City, and their children, Will IV and Elizabeth Jayne, also survive Dr. Bailey. Foster children were: Walid Zarzar, Chris Clyde, Ronnie Roberson and Mike Roberson; and brother-in-law, James Dowell and his wife, Mary, of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews, and one grandnephew survive. A memorial service for Dr. Bailey will be held Monday, March 21st, at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Wells officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Dr. Peter Caravello, Dr. Collier Jordon and members of the Asbury Fellowship Class of First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the parlor of the church from noon until 2:00 prior to the service.
